Antique Victorian 00 Bronze Call Bell East Hampton, CT 1880s Ship School

Genuine, late 19th-century hand-cast bronze bell, likely produced in the famous "Bell City" of East Hampton, Connecticut. This is a professional-grade utilitarian bell, not a modern decorative reproduction. It features the classic "00" size pattern stamp on the crown, a designation used by premier American foundries like Bevin Bros. High-Copper Bell Metal: This bell is cast from a high-tin/copper bronze alloy, evidenced by its rich, deep-toned resonance and the authentic verdigris patina. Unlike brass or iron reproductions, this bronze has a long "decay" when struck. Dimensions: Approximately 5" in diameter at the mouth and 5" in total height. Hand-Finished Details: The top of the rectangular hanger (the "cannon") features a distinct lathe-centering dimple, a hallmark of 19th-century manufacturing where bells were turned and tuned by hand after casting. Original Clapper: Includes its original "acorn" or teardrop-shaped clapper with the period-correct wire attachment. The "00" Stamp: The serif-style font of the size marking is consistent with post-Civil War foundry molds c. Condition: Excellent antique condition with no cracks or chips to the rim. The metal surface shows an honest, dark-aged patina earned over a century of exposure. History & Use: A Size 00 bell of this weight and dimensions was the "workhorse" of the era. It was designed for use as a maritime fog bell on small New England vessels, a rural schoolhouse call bell, or a farmstead dinner bell. It was built to be heard across distance and to withstand the elements. Note: The included iron wall hook is a later addition and is not original to the bell, but it serves as a sturdy mounting solution for display. A wonderful piece of American industrial history, perfect for collectors of maritime artifacts, antique hardware, or New England history.
