Up for your consideration is. A RARE authentic antique large and heavy solid brass bell. This is not a cheap replica (like many that were made in the 1960's to mimic this piece) this is an ANTIQUE authentic piece. Bells face reads "CHIANTEL FOUNDEUR" which translates to Chiantel Foundry, the other side reads "1878 SAIGNELIGIER" which refers to the foundry's founding year and Saignelegier the town in Switzerland this bell was made. There are bas relief detailed medallions around the crown and on the sides of the bell.
The Swiss Cross is stamped on each side of the date. F course, this cross is the same national symbol used on the Swiss Flag. Shows amazing craftsmanship, quality and detail. Large and heavy weighing 3 LBS 9 OZ with clapper. Bell itself measures 6 Inches X 6 Inches X 5 1/4 Inches. Aged patina remains (can be polished / cleaned further if desired). Authentic bells were used in Switzerland for livestock and sleighs, and many were exported to the U. A company named Bevin Bros. Made reproductions of this bell in the USA in the 20th century. One of several ways those reproductions can be identified by a clapper hung on a flimsy wire attached to a loop inside the top of the bell. This bell does not have that type of clapper, but rather a heavy strong steel clapper. According to my research, strong indications of authenticity are: heavy brass, crisp original markings, deep casting detail, and a steel clapper. On this piece, there is a minor imperfection from age and legitimate use. A section of the lower edge of the bell is missing / broken off at seam, as I've shown in photos. This does not detract from the bell's ability to stand perfectly upright on a tabletop or shelf. Nor does it affect the sound of the bell. The tone of this bell is bold, crisp, and very loud.
