1880s 10 Christmas Sleigh Bells Brass Orig. Swedish Rump Strap Horse

Estate find - set of ten 1880's antique brass sleigh bells on their original Swedish leather Rump Strap. These have a fabulous patina from over 130 years of wear. The brass sleigh bells are perfect with no cracks or fractures. The leather strap in the middle came apart due to age but the leather belt holding the bells is in very nice condition. The metal rivets holding the leather rump strap together are all original and function well.

The Bells run from a large size of 3 down to 1.75 on each side of the leather strap. These are antique and do show their age but would be a wonderful old set of sleigh bells for a collector or to display over a fireplace, especially during the Christmas season! Swedish bells are the "big boys" of the horse bell world, often measuring 2 to 3 inches in diameter.

Their size gives these bells a much louder, deeper "clanging" sound. Many Swedish bells (sometimes called Swiss or Norwegian bells) were made in America, then exported to Scandanavian countries, where they were very popular. A distinctive feature of Swedish bells is the narrow throats (slits) that are cut or formed into each bell as it is made.

The throats of other types of sleigh bells are usually formed during the casting process. Traditional Swedish bells are cast brass. They have a distinct ridge around the middle and a graceful tulip shape. They are found in sizes from 1 3/4" to 3 1/4" diameter, although bells 2 1/4 and larger are the most common.
