This is a set of vintage early 1800s Conestoga wagon bells hand made of brass, or an alloy, attached to a flexible steel strap which was placed in the horse's harness while pulling Conestoga wagons used at the time. The phrase "Be there with bells on" originated with these. Each bell measures roughly 3 inches tall and 3.5 inches wide at the bottom with a steel clapper.
This set of 5 bells, which were usually worn by the lead horse, measures 22 inches across, 15 inches high and weigh 6 lbs. One end bell has a small hole near the top shown in photo and some corrosion at the top of the bell and the bell at the opposite end is loosely mounted but secure. All bells ring loud and clear, each having a slightly different tone which sounds quite nice.. Here is your chance to own a piece of history.
